Castelo de Sao Jorge

The Castle of St. George was a must-see–not only because it bears the name of my brother, but because it was supposed to have amazing views of the city. I hiked across town, begrudgingly paid the 8 Euro entrance fee, and when I entered, I didn’t regret it at all. The views were absolutely stunning.

A brief history lesson. The castle was built by the Moors in the 11th century and became a royal palace for the Portugese kings and queens from the 13th to 17th centuries.

I don’t really care much about castles or forts, but the scenery was just so beautiful.

Definitely a must-see if you plan to visit Lisbon!

  • I love the Moorish art and architecture in southern Spain. This looks just like that. Imagine their being in that part of Europe.
