Weekend Musings

IMG_1441 The town of Zelsheim

First of all, I have seen the sun more days than I have not this week. Maybe January’s not going to be as grey as November and December. (However, I’ve been here in February before and it’s just as bad). I actually wore my sunglasses today and was relieved that I could actually find them.

What a full weekend! I was back in action: biking to the market, meeting up with friends, working out, soaking in the sun.

Hello Frankfurt!

On Saturday, I took a litte trip to Zeilsheim. It’s a small town about 20 min west of Frankfurt. I found an olympic weightlifting coach online and went to meet up with him to see if we wanted to work together. So I took my bike on the S bahn, and when I got to Zeilsheim, biked to the Stadthalle (a rec center). It was quite a trek, especially for a Saturday, and now I have to decide if I want to commit to going there regularly on Saturdays to lift.

IMG_1440 This is the gorgeous scene that greeted me when I got off the train.

The coach is in his 70s and was throwing weight around like he was 20. He hardly spoke English, but he was still able to give me a training plan and help me with my technique. He smelled like potatoes and sausages, but he had a good sense of humor. He video taped my lifting and already sent me an email with the videos and his comments:

“look at times to your motions, the best on a large monitor.
When snatch the pulling height is too high, and above all the pull too far from the
Waist removed and is thus beyond the center line.
The Clean goes somewhat!
When Yerk the momentum Get agrees not so good and your Yerk forward.
In most cases, you can compensate for this error with a good lunge (jump).
Overall, I think your technique will go well improve.”

Makes perfect sense.

So, in striving for this feeling of balance I’m so desperately trying to achieve, after training, I headed out to have some fun with my friend Chrissy. We went to a cute little tapas restaurant, then wandered around until we came to a Greek bar with grown adults dancing on the tables.

IMG_1444 The picture does not do justice to how hard these people were getting down.

The weekend wrapped up with a relaxing Spirit Sunday full of the essentials: cooking, tea, a walk by the river, podcasts, German homework and some Taylor Swift.

Rejuvenation. Balance. Wine. Lifting. Friends. Sun. A weekend full of my loves.
