Laundry Sunday in Lisbon

DSC_2882 This is one of my favorite pics I took today.

I narrowed down my pictures from today to the absolute best I want to share…and there are over 40! I have so many stories to tell, too (stories just formulate themselves in my head when I travel alone).

I wandered up and down the tiny streets of Lisbon today, embracing the languid pace of a Sunday that’s so typical of European cities. Each corner revealed a different surprise: sweeping views of the Tagus river, persimmon-colored tile rooftops, Medieval buildings.

But the most intriguing of all: Sunday is laundry day in Lisbon.

In the alleys, the smells of Portugese cooking mixed with Latin tunes wafting from the apartments. Lisboans perched in windowsills and I almost felt like I was intruding with my camera and guidebook. But that didn’t stop me from taking pictures of peoples’ unmentionables.

Somehow, the colors on the laundry lines added to the colors of the doors, shutters, and tile facades of the buildings.

I got such a chuckle out of seeing so much hanging laundry all across town. I started thinking that every neighbor knows what every other neighbors’ sheets and underwear look like.

It even reminded me of my first months in Germany when I couldn’t figure out the dryer and had my own laundry draped all over my apartment.

So the city won over my heart…thanks in part to this small glimpse into the Sunday lives of the locals.

    • Mary- it was never really on my list. But I definitely recommend it, especially if you’ve been wanting to come. It reminds me a lot of the small towns in Italy.
