I love that quote from Jill Miller, a yoga and mobility extraordinaire.
I feel like there have been a lot of articles recently about the importance of moving and stretching and appreciating what the human body.
Is it just me or have you been reading all of them too? (ok, maybe it’s just me).
Anyway, when I think about how I spend my day, the majority of it is standing at my desk, sitting on the train, and sitting in meetings.
But I’ve started finding ways to add movement throughout my day.
Instead of maybe doing a lunchtime walk, I’ve made this a mandatory. Unless it’s pouring rain, I’m walking 30 minutes after my lunch.
I see this as having two benefits: one, I’m actually moving my body, and two, I’m clearing my mind and tackling my afternoon feeling refreshed and mentally clear (or was that three?).
Now that the sun’s out longer, I’m trying to add walks in the morning or evening. It’s tough to do, but I think it’s important and I know I can do it. After all, walks at lunch were at one time difficult to fit in.
In this week’s Barbell Shrugged podcast, they discuss proper recovery after workouts, preparing your body for the following day, and fixing the damage you do to your body each day (damage being sitting, hunching over your computer…all the unnatural postures we assume for the majority of the day).
Evaluate your day and if you spent the majority of your day sitting or stagnant, what can you do tonight to undo that damage? Can you go for a short walk? Do a few simple stretches that counter the posture you were in all day? What can you do to undo today’s problems and prepare your body for tomorrow?
They say you should spend 15-20 minutes on stretching and moving (and an additional 15-20 for every hour you workout), plus 30 minutes to an hour walking. Every. Day.
I’m pretty sure the time in my day is going to run out soon. But somehow I manage to find the time. After all, the journey is the destination.
