A meal that is quickly becoming a staple is pork, eggs and greens (sorry for the amateur food pic, Brenda). I think it’s because these are some of the easiest foods to identify and because pork products are in abundance here. Seriously, my pork consumption has skyrocketed. Stay tuned for skyrocketing cholesterol (if you believe there is a correlation between dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol, which I do not).
So, it’s pretty “easy” to get a cut of ham, some eggs, spinach and call it a day. I found spanferkel schinken at Kleinmarkthalle, the market in Frankfurt that I love to go to.
Spanferkel schinken was the best ham I have EVER had. It was amazing. Mouth watering.
Kleinmarkthalle has vendors from all over Europe and the Middle East selling all kinds of foods from cheese to bread to produce to meats and everything in between. It also has a wine bar upstairs and tents are set up outside festival-style on the weekends for people to eat, drink and socialize. Because a day wouldn’t be complete without wine and socializing and festivalling.
Last Saturday I made the mistake of going mid-day. BIG mistake. It was packed with tourists and old people. Old people love this place! I think it’s because of the free samples, which is why I like it too. This Saturday, I went right at 8am when it opened, and found it was much easier to navigate and get what I wanted. I already have a couple of favorite vendors that I frequent. I got olive oil, hummus and pesto from Italy, avocados from Spain, ground lamb, and more spinach, eggs and ham. The lamb has been a welcome ham alternative. I’m 65% sure it was lamb. I forgot to Google it, but the name sounded like lamb.
the meat counter pic is rough on the empty stomach
