So, day 2 started off a little differently from day 1.
We had been closely monitoring the weather since we arrived. It started raining during the night, but the rain let up in the morning, so we planned to do a short hike and return at noon, when the rain was supposed to start up again.
Needless to say, riding up the ski lift while engulfed in a cloud wasn’t too reassuring that we had made the right decision.
When we got to the top of the mountain, I felt like I was in Scotland…or a dream (are they kind of the same thing?).
It was completely surreal to hike through this cloud all day.
I had completely let the Germans take control. Every time they consulted the map, or signs, or had a conversation about what to do, I stepped away (I couldn’t understand anyway). I mean, they are the Alps experts.
So, not only was I hiking through a cloud, but I also had no idea where I was going, or when I was going to get there.
We ended up making it to a hut for food and a rest around noon – the time when we were supposed to be back down at our hotel.
It took us about 3 hours to make it back down the mountain. By then, the rain had started. Off and on pouring and mist, we made our way back down.
There were times when I was a little nervous, but I kept reminding myself of the resourcefulness of Germans.
And at the end of another six hour day, we feasted on Austrian wine, cheese and meat!
