Don’t you Remember
The Fifth of November,
‘Twas Gunpowder Treason Day,
I let off my gun,
And made’em all run.
And Stole all their Bonfire away.
Tonight is Guy Fawkes Night, and the celebrations surrounding it are just as big here as Halloween is in the US.
On Nov 5 1605, Guy Fawkes was arrested for plotting to blow up the House of Lords and assassinate King James I. After his arrest, people lit bonfires around London to celebrate that the king had survived. It became a public day of thanksgiving, with people shooting fireworks and marching for religious rights.
Right now, there’s an anti-capitalist “Million Mask March” going on at Trafalgar Square where everyone’s wearing Guy Fawkes masks.
There are fireworks celebrations all weekend, and I’ve been hearing fireworks all over the city.
Aside from bonfire day, I went on a run in Regents Park this morning. Like most parks in London, it’s gorgeous, especially with all the fall colors.
