Yesterday, I got an email that I had a package. My Internet!! I hurried downstairs to the mailroom to be disappointed (and still somewhat excited) to find that it was office supplies (including precious hanging file folders).
I came home last night to a postcard in German. It was from my Internet “provider” (although they haven’t provided much). I quickly Googled the words I didn’t understand and pieced together that it was urgent and may or may not be related to my Internet. Even though it was 9pm, I called the cell number on the postcard. The man didn’t speak English, so we pieced together that he was closed and I should call back tomorrow. He said achtzehn uhr, which means 6pm. In my head, I’m thinking how nonsensical this whole conversation is.
Luckily, all my co-workers are aware of the great Internet caper I am a part of, so when I brought in the postcard for their help, one was willing to call for me. After a lot of back and forth, questions, notes, he hung up and explained the situation.
“Your router should be arriving today or tomorrow, they just mailed it out on Monday. This guy has to come turn off the cable since you don’t have a TV.” (again, I only understand about half of what’s going on).
In a few days it will be a month since I signed up for Internet. I don’t believe I will get it before the weekend. I don’t even remember what life was like with Internet, or how my life will change once I get it.
Meanwhile, unrelated to Internet (since I have more time to read books now), I came across an interesting quote that I feel is a good reminder for my getting settled here:
“If you want to be accepted by a community, you first have to be a good citizen of that community.”
Good food for thought…
