May-cation

Germany has 3 national holidays in May…making it the best time to take a vacation and get the most bang for your days off.

So, I’m headed to Asia. First stop: Bhutan.

I’ll spend a week in this mysterious country with a small group, led by my yoga teacher from London.

I honestly don’t know what to expect. Here’s what I’ve been able to find out so far.

The country, nestled in between China and India in the Himalayas, has remained relatively secluded from the modernization of the rest of the world.

The ban on TV and internet was only lifted in 1999. Tourism was only recently allowed, and even then, tourists must commit to spending at least $250 a day. Smoking is not allowed.

It’s still very steeped in culture and tradition, and it’s called the land of the thunder dragon, or the forbidden kingdom.

It’s also one of the most untouched countries – so I’m assuming the landscape is going to be like none I’ve ever seen before.

Bhutan is guided on a concept they created: Gross National Happiness (instead of GDP). They measure the well-being of the country on a scale that includes items like harmony with nature, preserving the environment, health, education, psychological well-being.

I’m also obsessed with their king and queen, and their son. Queen Jetsun Pema, was a commoner who married the king for love; at 27, she’s the world’s youngest queen. And although the king’s father has four wives, the current king has said he is committed only to the queen. They are such a stunning couple, smart, committed to their country, and in love (they’re often called the Will and Kate of the Himalayas).

Excited to share pics and stories as I travel to the land of kings, queens, and dragons.

  • Hi! By accident I stumbled upon you webpage…I happen to live in Hamburg, too. And I happen to have lived in Thimphu for 12 months. I’d be curious to hear your perspective on the country given your recent vacation. Perhaps we can meet up for an (ice-)coffee these days? Johann

    • Hi Johann! Crazy! I would love to meet up. Is this your correct email address? I can send you an email to work out the details. I’m sifting through all my notes and pictures and will be blogging my thoughts very soon.
