Museumsuferfest

I hope you’re not getting sick of hearing about festivals. Because I’m not getting sick of going to them.

This weekend was the best and biggest I’ve been to so far, and after this weekend, I cannot control my excitement for the Christmas markets, which are supposed to be even better.

The Museumsuferfest took place all weekend, and for just €7, you could visit any museum in Frankfurt. The Museumsufer (ufer means shore) is a stretch of museums along the river a short walk from my house. But contrary to what the name suggests, this festival is about much more than museums. It was a celebration of art and music (and, yes, food too).

BOTH sides of the river were lined with tents and stages and vendors. It ran at least a mile long. Stage after stage of performers, tent after tent of every type of food you could imagine–African, Brazilian, Indian, Vietnamese, Chinese. I didn’t even recognize half of the food. I went both Friday and Saturday nights for the festival action, then decided to get my culture on today at the museums.

I checked out the impressionist art at the Städel (Degas, Renoir, Manet!), then headed to the Schirn to see the Paparazzi exhibit (featuring photos of celebs through history), and finally the Jewish museum to experience the history of the Jewish community in Frankfurt (I was reminded that Anne Frank was from Frankfurt).

I was so exhausted from museum hopping that I had to get some hand-cut chips and a falafel wrap on the walk back. I came home this afternoon and people are still looking for parking spots even into the evening. The festival wraps up tonight with fireworks.

Another exhausting weekend. But this week brings a new month, old friends, and Paris! Bring it on!
