Schloss Neuschwanstein among the clouds.
Well, after getting schlossed at Oktoberfest, we spent the next day visiting the famous schlosses in Füssen. Füssen is a two hour train ride from Munich and home to two of crazy king Ludwig’s castles, Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau.
Neuschwanstein is the most popular castle, as the Disney castles were based off of it, so we chose to visit that one, and just experience Hohenschwangau from below. Again, Neuschwanstein was another item on Kristen’s bucket list.
In Füssen, it was super foggy and pouring rain. That didn’t deter us from making the 30 minute uphill walk to the castle with the rest of the tourists. We also didn’t want to wait 2 hours for the next guided tour in English, so we chose the audio guide tour in Italian (Kristen) and Spanish (me). Note: Neither one of us has spoken either of those languages in years.
At the top of the hill, with soggy hair!
The castle was beautiful–what we could see of it. There are apparently gorgeous Alps in the background.
We ended up visiting the interior of the castle with an Asian tour group, and the guy handing out audio guides gave us a strange look when we requested our languages of choice. Luckily for us, English was an option (we were not told that at the ticket booth).
Our thoughts at the end of the tour? Not worth it. We only got to see about three rooms, they were nothing spectacular, and there were way too many tour groups. Next time we would save the day’s worth of travel and do something more local in Munich. Like visit Oktoberfest again. Kidding. Kind of.
